Environmental History
of the Spokane River

Long Lake Dam

Long Lake Dam sits between Lincoln and Stevens counties and about 35 miles northwest of the city of Spokane. Long Lake Hydroelectric Power plant is historically and architecturally significant as a symbol of early twentieth-century technology  and as being the largest energy generating facility of Washington Water Power for many years. Though its creation was highly praised for providing the greater Spokane area with electricity, so too was the dam critiqued for its impacts on the river and surrounding ecosystems.
